Snoring is a sign of obstruction of your airway. All snoring has health implications, whether it’s soft and infrequent or nightly and loud. If you’re here to learn more and are asking yourself how you’ll know just how serious your snoring is, then read our description of snoring below. Snoring is a warning sign that should not be ignored. It’s an early signal that you’re putting yourself at risk for diseases such as type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure and Alzheimer’s if not treated right away.
We receive thousands of patient referrals from primary care physicians, cardiologists, neurologists, and other specialty care physicians. Each of them asks their patients one simple question, do you snore?
Why, you ask?
Because they know we don’t talk enough about the connection between snoring, obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) and chronic illness and disease.
“37% of adults in the US have sleep apnea according to new data released in June of 2019. That’s 54 million people. Even more staggering, half are identified as moderate or severe cases, with 40% likely to die within 15 years. The numbers are big, and it’s easy to imagine you’re not one of them, but if you’re snoring or you struggle with one of the associated diseases it’s worth the time to find out.”
–Dr. William Noah, Medical Director
Doctors know…
If you have Type 2 Diabetes and you snore, you’re 86% likely to have Obstructive Sleep Apnea.
If you have high blood pressure and you snore, you’re 40-80% likely to have Obstructive Sleep Apnea.
If you have heart disease and you snore, you’re 50-75% likely to have Obstructive Sleep Apnea.
You don’t need a referring physician to find out if your snoring is a sign of something more serious.

What is Your Snoring Telling You?
I Experience Infrequent, Soft Snoring Sounds at Night
The soft snoring sounds might be most noticeable after drinking alcohol or when suffering from allergies or illness.
What Does It Mean?
It indicates a mild obstruction of the airway during sleep.
Behavioral changes such as avoiding alcohol or losing excess weight can help address mild snoring, however, it’s an early indication of future obstructive sleep apnea. Even mild snoring is considered disordered breathing, and worsens with age and weight gain.
What Should I Do?
Understanding your situation by consulting with a sleep specialist can help you avoid future symptoms and health complications.
I experience frequent snoring which happens 3 or more nights a week.
You may notice mild to moderate difficulty breathing when you sleep, and during the day you feel tired.
What Does It Mean?
It indicates a moderate obstruction of the airway during sleep.
At this stage, you may have moderate obstructive sleep apnea which puts you at serious risk of long-term complications if untreated or treatment is delayed. Symptoms at this stage may include headaches, memory loss, irritability, fatigue, depression. You may also be showing early signs of high blood pressure and diabetes and struggling with weight gain.
What Should I Do?
Contacting a sleep specialist at this stage will help prevent more serious illness and complications linked to obstructive sleep apnea.
I snore most nights. My snoring is loud and can often be heard outside of the bedroom.
This is an indication that your airway is blocked and breathing is inhibited. You may stop breathing for brief periods of time, causing you to choke or gasp for air, and to come out of deep sleep or wake yourself up.
What Does It Mean?
At this stage, your sleep quality is poor and you are likely already suffering from more serious obstructive sleep apnea which leads to and worsens serious health issues such as stroke, heart attack, high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, depression, anxiety, and erectile dysfunction.
